The generic medicine company celebrates its 5th anniversary and strengthens its position in the international market

Barcelona, November 26, 2025. Towa International, the international hub of Towa Pharmaceutical, headquartered in Barcelona, celebrates its fifth anniversary by consolidating itself as the only Japanese company with direct presence in Europe and the U.S., specializing in the research, development, manufacturing, and distribution of generic medicines.

Founded in 2020 as part of the internationalization strategy of Towa Pharmaceutical, a leader in the Japanese generics market with more than 70 years of experience, Towa International has grown from a local factory to become the global hub of the Japanese group. Under the umbrella of its anniversary campaign “Tracing The Future,” the company celebrated five years of deliberate, precise, and purposeful steps in 2025.

During this time, Towa International has driven a sustained expansion plan combining strategic investment, capacity expansion, research and development projects, a people-centered corporate culture, and sustainability as a cross-cutting pillar.

Over these five years, the company invested more than 65 million euros in the expansion of its production plant, strengthening its leadership areas such as the development of modified-release dosage forms through new equipment and capabilities. Of this investment, 15 million euros have been allocated to the construction of a new high-containment area, which will be operational during the first quarter of 2026, stemming from a strategic decision to maximize the potential of its production and R&D capabilities.

Towa International has also reinforced its commitment to research and development, investing more than 100 million euros in R&D projects between 2020 and 2025. In 2024, more than 5% of sales were dedicated to R&D, consolidating its commitment to scientific excellence and continuous improvement.

This investment strategy has gone together with steady growth; revenue has gone from 297 million euros in 2020 to over 330 million euros in 2024, representing an 11% rise. Carlos Prieto, Chief Financial and Corporate Services Officer, states: “This fifth anniversary coincides with the best economic performance recorded to date and with a solid investment plan that lays the foundation for our future growth. Our priority is to strengthen our presence in key markets, expand our product portfolio, and further reinforce our production and R&D capabilities.”

The company’s growth has gone hand in hand with the people who are part of it. Since 2020, Towa International has created more than 150 new jobs. Currently, the company has nearly 1.000 employees, 800 of whom work in Spain, and it is committed to a people-centered organizational culture.

Meritxell Ferraté, Chief People, Sustainability and Transformation Officer, highlights: “In five years we have undergone a transformative journey, evolving from a local plant to becoming the international hub of a Japanese multinational, integrating different cultures and identities. Moreover, since 2023, we have implemented Towa Taiko, a new agile way of working that focuses and aligns the entire organization toward a common goal, makes change tangible and accelerates it, and generates real and measurable impact. We have the participation of more than 120 people and have achieved more than 80% of the objectives established in alignment with the strategic plan.

Furthermore, during this transformation, sustainability has been a key pillar in Towa International’s evolution and has become a cross-functional driver structured around ESG criteria (Environment, Social, Governance). The company has reduced its own emissions by 60%, significantly decreased energy and water consumption through 100% renewable sources, and is moving toward its goal of becoming a Net Zero company.
